A tragic story has been told about the immigrant, Jacob Barker. As the family was traveling from Maryland to Pennsylvania, more provisions were needed, so Jacob set out to buy these. Days passed; his young bride & children waited, but Jacob did not return. The family resumed their journey, convinced that Jacob had been killed by robbers. Arriving in Pennsylvania, Katherine, now widowed and penniless was told to ask the priest for help. The priest found employment and shelter for the family. It was at this time that the Barkers converted to Catholicism due to the kindness of the priest.
