Database of places in Bavaria

This database includes about 42,000 names of Bavarian places, for more than half of them, page references to the Historical Atlas of Bavaria are also included.

It's not only a kind of Gazetteer for Bavarian places. IT's ALSO the STARTING POINT of an information portal, which automatically provides countless links to other very interesting Bavarian communities and place information, e.g. maps, articles, books, town hall addresses, website addresses etc.. And also page references for the HAB (Historical Atlas of Bavaria) and links to the respective digital available volumes, in case they are already available online. The only thing or links it does NOT include is parish or church-related info.

Since this *Ortsdatenbank der BLO * is sadly only in German language, please find below some guiding info in English which I tried to compile, to help English list members to navigate this site. So, any English speaking list member who is either dedicated or adventurous enough to try her/his luck on a German only website, SEE BELOW, have fun and Good luck with your research. :-) Hope this info is of help to someone out there. Regards, Alija

The available SEARCH OPTIONS:

ORTSSUCHE [ place search]

  • alphabetical free text search
  • Asterisk (*) as joker for undefined number of letters is possible

[Alijas note:] I didn't test how case sensitive for "Umlauts" in place names the database is. So, EN list members have to experiment here.

  • Translation of German word on the search page: Land (Country), Regierungsbezirk (Government District), Kreis /Landkreis (County), Gemeinde (Community), Ort (Place)
  • Best option is to use the default "beliebig" (meaning kind of unspecific or include all options in the search)

HIERARCHISCHE SUCHE [hierarchical search]

  • Leads step-by-step through the database.
  • For ENGLISH speaking persons the best way here might be to navigate it via clicking on the arrow(s). This leads you systematically through the following option sequence: Bayern (Bavaria), - > Regierungsbezirke(Government Districts), - > Landkreise (Counties), - > Gemeinden (Communities) - > Orte (places).

SUCHE MIT BAYERNKARTE [Search via map of Bavaria]

  • To get started click on the respective county you want to research.
German words on the result page mean:
Objekttyp: (object type), Schlagwort: (Catchwort), Kreiskennziffer:
(a database internal number), liegt im Regierungsbezirk: (is located
in the Government District), liegt im Metakreis: (is located in the area),
  Anzahl Gemeinden: (Number of communities).

For example, clicking on the number beside *Anzahl Gemeinden:* brings up the *list of all the communities* belonging to the researched county. - > Clicking on the name of a shown community brings up the page with

information about this community, plus small map.
German words on the result page (not yet mentioned above) mean:
Gemeindekennziffer: (a database internal number for the community),
Anzahl Orte: (number of places [in the research community]),
Blattnumber der Topograph. Karte: (page number of the topographical

map). Here you have several options to access more information: a) see: General: Nr. 1) BELOW b) - > clicking on the number beside *Anzahl Orte:* brings up the list of .........* all the places * that belong to this community, .........German words on the result page mean: Auswahl (choices), .........Ortsname (place name), Ortstyp (type of place, e.g. Dorf (villages), .........Weiler (hamlet), Hauptort (community) etc. ......... - > clicking on the respective *place name* brings up the page ...............with information about this place, plus small map. Most of the ...............German words appearing on this page were already explained ...............above. ...............For further search options you have here, ...............see General: Nr. 2) BELOW
