Geography
The Blockland is marsh landscape with thick loamy soil. It has his name from the ditches which divides the land in blocks. The level of the land is partly less than 1 meter (3.2 feet). The Blockland forms a depression between the dunes at the Weser and the Wümme, which is the northern frontier to Lower Saxony. Near Wasserhorst the Wümme and the Hamme river unites to the Lesum river. The numerous number of ditches are used today for sport activities (water- and wintersport).
Till the opening of the Lesum lock in 1979 the Blockland was often affected by highwater. Therefore the settlement of this area started in the 13th century when the first dikes were built. The houses were built on artificial raised small hills (called Wurten and Warften) and lay along the Wümme.
Villages and places are Wasserhorst, Wummensiede, Oberblockland and Niederblockland.
