How to find a place you think exists
The non-German speaker who has German ancestry inevitably winds up looking for the source location of his family in Europe. Most frequently this is where the difficulty starts because of unfamiliarity with place names and historical locations. In addition to this difficulty the writer of whatever locations we possess may not himself have been familiar with the spelling and historicity of the location. The general catch-all of Prussia is the worst of all descriptions as that could have been almost anywhere in Germany.
