ASSO

Meaning

ASSOCIATES

Usage

Link to witnesses, godparents, friends, neighbors, relatives, employees or companions of a person.

Formal Description of Permissible Values

Base: GEDCOM Standard Draft 5.5.1

Other associations or relationships than the relations within a family are represented by the ASSOciation tag. The person's relation or association is the person being pointed to. The association or relationship is stated by the value on the subordinate RELA line. For example:

0 @I1@ INDI
  1 NAME Fred /Jones/
  1 ASSO @I2@
  2 RELA Godparent

This indicates that the person described in record I2 is the Godparent of Fred Jones.

The formal syntax for such a link is:

ASSOCIATION_STRUCTURE:=
n ASSO @<XREF:INDI>@ {1:1}
  +1 RELA <RELATION_IS_DESCRIPTOR> {1:1}
  +1 <<SOURCE_CITATION>> {0:M}
  +1 <<NOTE_STRUCTURE>> {0:M}

So we can supplement the description of the connection under the tag RELA (as plain text) with sources citations and comments.

A substantial restriction in the GEDCOM standard is that the ASSOCIATION-STRUCTURE must only be used in INDI records, and then only at level 1. The association pointer only associates INDIvidual records to INDIvidual records.

Agreements for ASSO

The agreements for ASSO are derived from the discussion on the Gedcom-L. They were decided by a vote of the program authors of the list.

A1 Relations between Individual Records

For the description of relations between individual records the tag ASSO is used as described in the standard. For programs with fixed data fields for such relations it is recommended to use following text behind RELA:

2 RELA Godparent
2 RELA Witness_of_Birth
2 RELA Witness_of_Death

A2 Extension to Family Records

For the description of relations from a family to an individual (e.g. witness of marriage) the tag _ASSO is used. Beside the assignment to the family record for _ASSO apply the same rules from the standard as for ASSO. For programs with fixed data fields for such relations it is recommended to use following text behind RELA:

2 RELA Witness_of_Marriage
2 RELA Witness_of_Civil_Marriage
2 RELA Witness_of_Religious_Marriage

A3 Extension to Events

If you want to describe relations of events or attributes of individual or family records to an ( other ) individual, it is permissible to use the _ASSO tag as sub-tag of the event or attribute. In addition to the revised classification in the structure the same rules from the standard for ASSO apply for _ASSO.

A4 Text Descriptions of Related Individuals

If the relation should not be referenced to an individual record, but by a textual description of the person(s), it is recommended to use the tag _GODP ( for godparents) and _WITN ( for witnesses ). The tag _GODP should be used in the individual record as sub-tag of CHR or BAPM, the tag _WITN in the individual or family record as sub-tag of the event with the witness.
