Usage

Indicates the sex of an individual - male or female.

Formal Description of Permissible Values

Base: GEDCOM Standard Draft 5.5.1

The syntax for the tag SEX is:

n SEX <SEX_VALUE>

with SEX_VALUE :=

[ M | F | U ]

M: Male

F: Female

U: Undetermined from available records and quite sure that it can’ t be.

The tag SEX is assigned at most once ( {0,1} ) to the individual record ( INDIVIDUAL_RECORD ) at the level +1.

Example:

0 @I12@ INDI
1 SEX M

Agreements for SEX

The agreements for SEX are derived from the discussion on the Gedcom-L. They were decided by a vote of the program authors of the list.

Use of tag SEX

The tag SEX is used exclusively in the form defined by the GEDCOM 5.5.1 Standard:

n SEX <SEX_VALUE>

with

SEX_Value := [ M | F | U ]

M: Male
F: Female
U: Undetermined from available records and quite sure that it can’ t be.

The tag SEX will be used a maximum of once ( {0,1} ) at the individual record ( INDIVIDUAL_RECORD ) at the level +1.
