  • Old-Prussian-Lithuanian "gnyblys" = pliers
  • "gnybti" = to make nasty remarks
  • "gnybeklis" = somebody who likes to make nasty remarks, malicious person
  • Prussian "gniwke" = a person who is malicious ,a money-grubber, inconsiderate


General Information

  • in 1785 a royal country village, in 1919 a rural municipality[5]
  • isolated small farms, 7 km North-East of Heydekrug, in 1939: 253 inhabitants[6]


Political Structure

in 1736 Gnieballen belonged to Schultz Biethellis Creyß to the administration of Heydekrug, County Memel[7]

in 1785 Gnieballen belonged to the Amt Heydekrug[8]
in 1940 Gnieballen is a municipality and a village.

Evangelical Church

In 1912 Gnieballen belonged to the parish of Ramutten, but before 1902 to the parish of Werden.
