Help talk:Revert to an earlier version
From GenWiki
Hi Wolf,
you have removed all pages from the Namespace "Genealogy.net" to the standard namespace. Why? The concept of namespaces is, that you can search only in a specific namespace if you want. Namespaces are separated with the sign : I think, it makes a lot of sence to keep help pages in a separate namespace, don“t you think so?
- Note: to see the use of namespaces, go to http://en.wiki.genealogy.net/index.php/Special:Preferences and you find the section, where to specify, which namespaces should be used for search routines. --kpwessel 17:15, 21 Dec 2004 (CET)
- OH, OH... as you can see, I still have a lot to learn.. :-( My only intention was to make things simpler..Well, I guess, I have to take another look into this subject..Please keep checking WIKI_EN for more boo-boo's... --wolf 17:46, 21 Dec 2004 (CET)
- : -(.. Still can't grab the overall idea..is "namespace" equivalent to "category" ? Above you use "Genealogy.net" and "Help" pages in the same sentence, but they are different categories, aren't they ? Is there a difference between WIKI_DE and WIKI_EN when using "Genealogy.net" ? Could you just change one of the pages the proper way as an example ? Thanks..--wolf 19:35, 21 Dec 2004 (CET)
- Namespace is not the same as a category. With a category articles a table of contents for articles, covering the same thematic content, can be created automatically. This helps, structuring the Wiki a bit, cause originally no article knows anything about another. In a Wiki per default, the structure is chaotic. With a category you can structure it.
A namespace is completly different. It is something like a Wiki inside a Wiki. Look to your personal preferences page and you will see, for what it is good (http://en.wiki.genealogy.net/index.php/Special:Preferences ). You can specify there, in which namespaces words will be searched. It is not really that important, its only there and can be used. I think, originally the intent was, to separate Help and other special pages from the search engine for regular articles.
If you want to change a page back to the old namespace, then just "move it" to another name. I have done so just now with the old article name: Tables which is moved now to: [[Genealogy.net:Tables] --kpwessel 00:08, 24 Dec 2004 (CET)
