Leitgirren, also Leidgirren, Leithgirren, Groß Leidgirren, County Niederung, East Prussia, since 1920 County Heydekrug, Memelland.


Name

Other Names and Spellings

The name refers to a damp forest.

  • Prussian "leit" = to pour
  • Prussian "leitaunikas" and Lettish "leitis" = Lithuanians (Inhabitants of a wet country)
  • Lithuanian "giria" = forest
  • "girininkas" = people living in a forest, forest warden


Political Structure

In 1940 Leitgirren is a municipality with an estate and a village.

Evangelical Church

In 1912 Leitgirren belonged to the parish of Kaukehmen.
