Name

Other Names and Spellings

Meaning of the Name

The name refers to a marshy place full of flies and mould

  • Old-Prussian "musa, muso" = fly (insect)
  • "musai" = mildew, mould
  • "dargelis" = reed bed
  • Lithuanian "muse, musele" = fly
  • "musele" = forget-me-not (myosotis)
  • "musele pasiutele" = mosquito
  • "musinas" = bluebottle
  • "musetas" = covered with flies
  • Prussian-Lithuanian "musas" = mould on fermented liquids
  • Latvian "muša, musa" = fly
  • "mušains" = covered with little dots


General Information

  • In 1785 a royal rural village, in 1919 a rural municipality[7]
  • According to Lange:[8]:
  • Several small farms
  • 12 km east of Heydekrug
  • Founded before 1540

Political Structure

In 1736 Mauszel Michel Dargen belonged to Schultz Starost Creyß in county Heydekrug, main district of Memel[9]
In 1785 Mussaten belonged to the district of" Amt Heydekrug".[10]
In 1.5.1939: Mussaten becomes part of the municipality Metterqueten.[11]



Church Structure

Evangelical Church

In 1912 Mussaten belonged to the parish of Werden.

Catholic Church

In 1907 Mussaten belonged to the Catholic parish of Szibben.

Cemetery

Mussaten had a cemetery.
To find it you turn left into a path in Metterqueten in front of the Szuste-bridge and follow the course. After some bends you see the entrance to the cemetery of Mussaten on the left side. You can recognize it easily: there are two big and old oaks .

Civil Registration

In 1907 Mussaten belonged to the civil registration of Paszieszen.

Mussaten as a place doesn`t exist any more. In 2012, from the former 26 farms/houses only six are left. It seems that today it belongs to the municipality of Kulėšiai .
