Name

Other Names and Spellings


Meaning of the name

The name Rupkalwen refers to a higher place where it is hard to work. The alternative name Blausden refers to a place which is difficult to reach.

  • Old-Prussian "rupit" = to care about, to worry
  • Curonian "rupinum" = worries, grief
  • Old-Prussian-Lithuanian "rupas" = uneven, bumpy, grief, worries

+ "kalva" = hill, unevenness

  • Prussian-Lithuanian "blauza, blauzda" = calf, lower leg
  • "blauzdlauža" = fracture of the leg, a half-frozen way on which people and animals can break their legs


General Information

  • in 1785 a royal country village, in 1919 a rural municipality[4]
  • several farms, 3 km South-West of Heydekrug, in 1939: 100 inhabitants, on a wooded hill in the middle of marshland[5]
