SCHILLER (1) The SCHILLER (I) was a 3-masted, square-rigged ship, built by Johann Lange, Vegesack/Grohn, for D. H. Watjen & Co, and launched on 9 July 1842. 227 Commerzlasten; 35,0 x 9,0 x 5,7 meters (length x beam x depth of hold). Under captains Hans Peter Gabriel Johannsen and Claus Bahr, both from Vegesack, the SCHILLER served in the North Atlantic trade, carrying emigrants to North America and returning with cargoes of tobacco and wool. No picture of the SCHILLER, later PENELOPE, is known to survive.
