Meaning of the Name

The name possibly refers to warm springs.That might have been the reason that exactly here was a "Krug in der Heide" (inn on the heathland) (Heydekrug) for the users of the spring.

  • Lituanian "verdēne" = bubbling spring

  • In 1785 a royal village with a mill,in 1919 a country municipality[4]
  • Church and railway station, 2,5 km east of Heydekrug, on the periphery of Szibben , founded before 1540[5]

Political Structure

Werden existed since the rule of Duke Albrecht of Prussia (* Ansbach 17.5.1490, + Burg Tapiau 20.3.1568).
Weszeiten and Neu Hermannlöhlen were united with Werden by cabinet order from 20/4/1897 [7]
Later Werdenberg belongs to Werden.
1/5/1939: Werden becomes part of the municipality Heydekrug.[8]

In 1912 the following places belonged to the parish of Werden :

Barsduhnen, Bismarck Eastern part, Bruisz Pakull, Cynthionischken, Gaidellen, Groß Grabuppen, Hermannlöhlen, Heydekrug place and estate, Jonaten, Kallningken, Kallwellischken, Kirlicken, Kirrelischken, Klein Grabuppen, Kolletzischken, Lapallen, Laudszen, Liekertischken, Matzicken, Maszen, Metterqueten, Minneiken a part, Mussaten, Oszkarten, Pagrienen, Radtkes Kolonie, Ruboken, Rudienen, Rumschen Kolonie, Rupkalwen, Schillmeiszen, Szieszgirren, Szibben, Szlaszen, Trakseden, Werden, Willeiken.

In 1912 from the above-mentioned places Radtkes Kolonie was integrated into the parish of Neu Rugeln.

In 1913 the following places belonged to the recently founded parish of Heydekrug: Bismarck Eastern part, Heydekrug place and estate, Lapallen, Rupkalwen, Szieszgirren, Szlaszen, Trakseden.

Before 1902 the following places of the parish of Ramutten belonged to the parish of Werden: Didszillen, Eydathen, Gnieballen, Ramutten, Szagaten.

Before 1844 the following places of the parish Saugen belonged to the parish of Werden: Alk, Augstumal, Baublen (Kr.Heydekrug), Berzischken, Bruiszen, Georgenhöh, Jonischken forest, Jündszen, Klein Barwen, Kukoreiten village and estate, Lapienen, Laschen, Laugallen (Kr.Heydekrug), Lenken, Mantwyden, Mestellen, Mischkogallen, Norkaiten forestry office and forest, Petrellen, Raukutten, Saugen, Schmittischken, Szagatpurwen, Szameitkehmen (Kr.Heydekrug), Wilkomeden, Wietullen, Wirkieten.

Churchbooks

The churchbooks of Werden only exist as films of the " Reichsippenamtes" , today in Leipzig (Sächsisches Staatsarchiv Leipzig). The originals are missing. Films can also be found at the "Mormons" .

Church schools in Werden

Around 1775 there was a church school in Werden. The inventory: [2] page 17. They had 1 table and 6 desks. Slates and catalogues were missing. For poor children they had 1 biblical history book in Lithuanian.The list was signed by Praecentor Johann Gottlieb Glube.[3]

Traffic

  • Since 1913 the 16 km long railroad from Heydekrug to Kolleschen (till 1938 Kolletzischken)
    passed through Werden.

The last stop was in front of the frontier near to Žemaičių Naumiestis (Neustadt).

History

  • 1757 In the summer (the Seven Years`War) the Russians under the command of Count Fermor and field marshal Count Apraxin invaded East Prussia.The 31st Dec.,1757 Tsar Elisabeth I. declared that East Prussia was Russian property.
  • 1758 Jan. A Russian army under Count Fermor conquered without fight the unprotected East Prussia.
  • 1762 After the death of Tsar Elisabeth (5.1.1762) her successor Tsar Peter III. made peace with Prussia (5.5.1762 treaty of St. Petersburg). Without compensation Russia gave back the conquered areas of East Prussia,Pomerania and Neumark.The Russians left the country and Werden was Prussian again.
  • 1945 Werden was conquered by the Soviet army.
